30 years of Doro! 30 years of rock and metal! Last weekend in Las Vegas, Doro received her well-deserved award, acknowledging her decades-long dedication, passion and love of music. She was met with enthusiastic applause and a standing ovation by the crowd when she received the “Metal Goddess” Legends Award at Vegas Rocks Hair Metal Awards in the Casablanca Event Center of Eastside Cannery Casino.

DORO: “It was incredibly nice, the people celebrated endlessly and everyone in the hall stood up and clapped for me – even my colleagues couldn’t rest on their chairs.”

Those colleagues were The Scorpions, who received a lifetime achievement award, as well as Twisted Sister among others.

Doro received her third Legend Award in Las Vegas – she has already been honored with two “Living Legend” awards; at the awards shows of prominent magazines in London and Berlin in 2013. “The first two award shows were already phenomenal, but how the Americans celebrated the evening here in Vegas, that’s unbeatable,” Doro explains after her return to Dusseldorf.

But there isn’t much time for Doro to enjoy this happiness as tomorrow, she will fly to Krasnodar, Russia with her band for another show on her world tour – which will take place next weekend.

Strong And Proud – 30 Years Of Rock And Metal will be released on June 24th via Nuclear Blast. Alongside Doro‘s anniversary shows in Wacken, Dusseldorf, New York and Moscow, an extensive music documentary entitled Behind The Curtain, Inside The Heart Of DORO, is included on the DVD as a special highlight. It delivers the spectator some deep, unique insights in the touring life of rock legend Doro.

DORO: “It features great impressions and never-before-seen pictures from our life behind the scenes. The camera team followed us for more than a year and captured very emotional, intimate and human situations.”

Interview ~ Doro

It’s really hard to believe that Doro Pesch began her career with Warlock over 30 years ago and you would never guess it if you get to see her in concert. The band’s debut album Burning the Witches was released back in 1984 with several releases that followed. 1989 saw the release of Force Majeure under the banner of Doro and metal’s reigning queen has never looked back. Fast forward to 2017 and fans around the world have seen quite an active period in the Doro camp. Along with live concert dates, fans were also treated to a brand new single and video with “Love’s Gone to Hell” as well as a CD/DVD release entitled Strong and Proud: 30 Years of Rock and Metal. The metal goddess is returning to the U.S. for a handful of dates starting on September 24 in Columbus, Ohio.

As always Doro, it’s a pleasure and honor to get to speak with you. How have you been?

Doro: I’m doing well; we just finished up a really great tour in the Ukraine and now we’re getting really excited for the new U.S. dates.

It’s great to have you back here in the states for a handful of dates.

The Farm Rock Festival in Chicago show got delayed until December, but we’re excited to be starting things off in Columbus, Ohio this Saturday.

Will you have the same guys with you for this new series of dates here in the U.S. that you had earlier in the year when you were here?

Yes, the same guys will be with except for the last gig which is the Rock Carnival in New Jersey. Johnny (Dee) will be playing with Britney Fox on the Monsters of Rock Cruise, so his friend Jeremy will be filling in on that date.

Did you revamp your set-list for these new U.S. dates?

I always try to put in all of the highlights and the hits from each of my records. “Love’s Gone to Hell” will also be there as well as “Love Me in Black.” That’s another song that was never officially released here in the states, but it’s one of our favorites. For the encores, the fans can call out what they want to hear and we’ll be prepared and happy to play them. They call out some great choices and sometimes some B-sides from around 1984 which can be tricky, but we’ll still try to. We always play ”Without You” for Lemmy (Kilmister) which is from the Burning the Witches album. It was my first ballad ever that I wrote back then with my guitar player.

We talked earlier this year about so many things that were coming up for you. Anytime is a great time to be a fan of Doro, but fans have really been blessed with things this year. We’ve had the live dates, the single and video for “Love’s Gone to Hell” and the DVD/CD released Strong and Proud: 30 Years of Rock and Metal. Something else pretty major also happened since we last talked. The Vegas Rocks Hair Metal Awards were in May in Vegas and you received the Metal Goddess Legends award.

That was definitely a highlight of my career and I have the award here in my living room in Germany. It was such a great day and Sally Steele, who is such a great lady, gave me that award. She has a magazine called Vegas Rocks and it was the first time that the awards had taken place in a big venue. Mikkey Dee of Motorhead was there, the Scorpions and Twisted Sister; all of the guys that I had toured with and knew like Kip Winger, Stephen Percy from RATT. We had a jam session at the end and we played DIO’s “Rainbow in the Dark” and it was one of the happiest days of my life. It was my third legends award; the first one was in England, the second in Berlin and now this one in the U.S. It meant so much to me and I couldn’t hold back my tears because it was so moving.

You’ve worked with some many great artists throughout your career, such as Lemmy, and I was wondering if you had anyone that you’d love to work with whether a veteran act or a newer artist on the rise?

I’d love to do something with Rammstein because I think they’re fabulous and so unique. They’re very out there and state of art, but still very different. I just did a nice song, it’s a duet, with Amon Amarth; they’re a Swedish Viking metal band. We did it on their last album Jomsviking and the song is called “A Dream That Cannot Be.” It had been a dream of mine to do something and then a few months ago, I got a phone call and an email asking me if I would be a part of this new song on their album. A lot of people think they’re a new band, but they’ve been doing this for quite a long time now. I’d also love to do a duet with James Hetfield (Metallica) or Blackie Lawless; there are so many great people out there. It’s great to have a story though, after touring together or doing something together before you record. The song also has to have a sort of magic to it as well. Don’t worry though; I plan on doing many more records and hopefully I will have many more great guests.

It’s funny that you mention Amon Amarth because we just got a press release about a new video of theirs for the song “Raise Your Horns” that you make an appearance in.

Oh, I haven’t seen it yet; they recorded something in the dressing room. It’s a great drinking song and I think the fans will love it.

We saw you earlier this year here in the states in Charlotte, North Carolina and I have to say that you looked to be in great shape. Do you have an exercise routing that you follow to help you stay in such great shape?

Thank you so much for saying that; I’m a big fan of martial of Philippines martial arts. You can do it with bumble sticks or knives or swords and that keeps in me in good shape physically and mentally. You learn discipline and you learn how to deal with pain; you can get hit while training and it hurts like hell. My trainer always told me that you could go sit down or you can move on and continue training. That helps me during shows even when I feel sick as a dog; I can still go out there and do what I have to do. Martial arts are for the body, soul and mind, so I am glad I picked that up a few years ago. I also do stuff like lifting weights and jogging when I’m out on tour.

You gave us a brand new single a few months ago with “Love’s Gone to Hell,” but can we expect a new album anytime soon? 2012 saw the release of your last studio album Raise Your Fist, not counting the limited addition that came out a year later.

Yes, a new record is in the making; “Love’s Gone to Hell” was actually for the new record, but it had so much magic to it that we decided to go ahead and release it. You never know what can happen in life, so I wanted to use the momentum and go ahead and release the single and let it stand on its own. We are working on a new album and there’s a song for Lemmy on it called “Living Life to the Fullest.” We have five songs recorded so far and we’re very excited about it. When you’re touring, it’s hard to spend so many months in the studio to do it; it’s not like we used to do it in the 80s or 90s.

I know it’s probably way too early in the process for a release date, but is it safe to tell the fans to expect it in 2017?

Yes, oh yes, definitely so.

As much as I hate to admit this, I see that our time today is just about up. Doro, thank you again so much for taking the time to talk with us.

Thank you for having me Johnny; it’s always so nice to talk to you. I also want to say thank you to all of the fans who have supported us all of these years. The fans are still my life and the most important thing in the world to me. I am so grateful that they are still there and I couldn’t have done any of this without them. I love all of them with all of heart and I always will.

Interview ~ Doro

The year was 1987 and metal was dominating MTV and the airwaves. The German metal band Warlock, led by its blonde powerhouse lead vocalist Doro Pesch, released one of the best albums of the year in September of that year entitle Triumph and Agony. Due to some legal issues, it proved to be the final album by Warlock as the band was forced to change its name to Doro. Here we are thirty years later celebrating the release of that classic album with a handful of live dates here in the U.S. by Doro who will be performing the album in its entirety. Guitarist Tommy Bolan will be joining Doro on these dates and it looks to be an amazing night of music for all who are lucky enough to attend. We recently talked to Doro about that landmark album, band’s faking it today and her brand new record label.

Hi Doro! It’s a pleasure to be able to talk to you again and the thought of doing a 30th anniversary of Triumph and Agony tour is an amazing idea! The only downside it seems is that you’re only doing a few select dates here in the U.S.

Doro Pesch: We plan on doing more shows, but at first we didn’t know if people would be interested. We will definitely be coming back and doing more.

Have you played the album in its entirety overseas or will the U.S. dates be the first time?

Yes we have and there were a couple of songs on there that we had never played live before ever. We rehearsed a couple of days and some of those songs turned out so nice and magical such as “Make Time for Love” and “Kiss of Death.” We played two festivals with one of them being the Sweden Rock Festival and it’s a huge festival in Sweden. Norway Rock was the other one and it was great too. For the America tour, we will be playing a bit longer so we will play the entire album and then all of the other classics such as “Night of the Warlock” and “Burning Witches.” It’s great playing the whole album and it brings back such great memories like Cozy Powell playing drums on some of the original tracks. When I listened to the record again so that I could learn all of the words again, I thought it was such a magical time in the studio when we made this record. You could hear the power and magic in it that was stronger than the three albums before it. Tommy Bolan played on it as well and he will be playing with us on these new dates. He’s such a great friend and a powerhouse guitarist.

How long had it been since you played with Tommy?

Actually, he has always played with us when we were in LA or close around. He’s originally from New York but he moved to LA. We’ve always remained friends and stayed in touch. He’s played with us on stage and did songs like “Metal Tango” and “East Meets West.” He’s still the same and a riot just like back in the day. Now, we have three guitar players in this band so there will be lots of guitars and solos.

This album was my first exposure to Warlock back in the day because I was working at an independent record store when this came out. I have to say that it has held us incredibly well to be thirty years old and it still sounds pretty amazing. There are many releases from that same era that can’t say the same.

Yes, I know what you mean; I felt the same when I was listening to it to learn these songs again. It sounds so great and back in 1987 we took a whole year to make. It was at The Power Station Studio and it’s now called Avatar. I didn’t know back then that it was a top notch and one of the best studios, but we had so much fun going in there day and night to record. Every song, every melody, every word and every song had so much depth to it. It took a long time, but it was done well and it was done right. I do think that it really does have a lot of depth to it because nowadays you do so much stuff on drum machines or on a computer. Back then, every note was played for real and with so much power, conviction and passion. The machines these days can’t give you those feelings.

I had an artist tell me in another interview that back in the day, if you didn’t have the talent you were removed from the equation. There are too many machines these days trying to make up for that lack of talent.

That is so true! Back then, Cozy Powell played on some of these tracks and when he hit those drums, he really hit them and you can’t replace that! When I hear a song like “Touch of Evil” and that intro, it has so much impact. You can fake it today, but back then it had to be real. I still like that old school feel and I try to keep it that way.

Another great memory of Triumph and Agony is the artwork that is involved with that album. In this digital age, I don’t think enough bands put a lot of emphasis in cover art these days. The artwork for that album is classic!

I’m so glad that you said that; it was actually painted by a great artist by the name of Geoffrey  Gillespie. He’s an English guy who lives in France and he still paints all of our album covers. The computers do most of this stuff today, but he still paints by hand which I don’t think anyone does anymore. It was a brilliant album cover and the back as well; it was almost like it had two fronts. The Warlock is squeezing me in his hand and it’s so dramatic. I think true metal heads still like the artwork, and the booklet; it’s a whole piece of art.

Regardless of the advancements in technology, there are still some things that are done better when they are done the old school way.

It’s funny you mention that because I have my own record label now. It’s small, but I want to put out all of our old records on vinyl or maybe on a picture disc. It may only be 500 copies, but maybe something handmade that you can put on your wall that looks great, feels great and not mass produced. You can’t get some of our old records anymore and it’s such a shame because many young fans don’t even know that these records exist. Last week, I made all of the necessary steps to have my own label to put out this stuff. I know it’s for a smaller group of people but I think these people will really appreciate it even more.

Did you have to go back and get the rights to all of that stuff?

I got all of the rights from 2000 to about 2013. All of the records that had been on SPV and on AFM, the rights came back to me. There’s one record coming out only for Germany and that will be only the German songs and one cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes.” Sometimes you just have to do these things yourself or nobody will care anymore. I don’t care if it sells well or not just as long as it makes some people happy.

You have some pretty hardcore fans, so I think it’s a safe bet that you will be making quite a few people happy. After all of these years, do your ever get nervous before you hit the stage?

In the beginning, I had so much stage fright that I would have to throw up but I don’t have to do that anymore. It’s not that bad anymore, but it still gets to me sometimes. People think that since I’ve been doing this for almost thirty five years that I don’t, but every show really does matter. Each show is a new challenge and you want to do the best that you can.

You recently posted a video on Facebook of you and the guys in the band in the studio working on the new album. When you and I talked last September, you had released “Love’s Gone to Hell” and we talked briefly about the new album. What’s the update on that?

The record is almost done and the songwriting is about 80% done. It has tons of anthems on it and I’d like to try out some of those by the end of the year while we are out on tour. One anthem has many, many guests on it and it’s a totally different song. There’s some heavier stuff on it and “Love’s Gone to Hell” was the first song from it. It also has a song for Lemmy on it called “Living Life to the Fullest.” We still have a couple of more months to work on it and it will be out sometime next year.

You don’t slow down one bit, do you? After these U.S. dates, you head back overseas for even more live dates.

Who needs sleep and who needs a break? This is all so much fun; I’ll get an idea for a song and then I can’t wait to get back into the studio or show it to my band.  I love music so much and I love my fans so much; to me there’s nothing more important than that. We’re also planning on maybe doing a Triumph and Agony live record with some newer songs with Tommy Bolan in the making. That’s next year as well, so there’s lots of good stuff ahead.

You never cease to amaze me; you run circles around so many of these younger bands. You could write a textbook on how things are supposed to be done.

I was so lucky that I could tour and meet such great people as Ronnie James Dio, Lemmy, Judas Priest and so many others. I learned so much from my heroes and I think the 80s metal bands and the new wave of British heavy metal gave us so many great things and people may not know it anymore. You formed a band back then, but it is so different than what it is today. I don’t even think they make musicians like Ronnie James Dio or Lemmy anymore. I want to do everything that I can to keep their legacy alive and teach the younger metal heads about them.

You’ve been friends and worked with so many legends throughout your career. Has anyone ever asked you to write a book?

Yes and I actually started one time and it got so intense. On one hand it was great and on the other hand it was really, really tough. When I started thinking about those tough things, it got to me and I couldn’t sleep at night. I am so glad that I survived many things, but at times it was really, really brutal. I decided that I had better focus on positive stuff like writing great, energetic music that gave people good feelings. People need that and especially in today’s day and age because so many are living in tough times. I thought about some of the things that went on I couldn’t really write about so maybe there will be two books. There will be a normal version and then one that really goes into everything.

I see that our time is just about up, so we will wrap this up. It’s always a pleasure talking with you Doro! Is there anything you’d like to lose with?

I want to thank everyone for their tremendous support and I love all of my fans. I will always give it my all and I hope to see all of you at these new shows. Keep rocking and keep metal alive!

Interview ~ Madame Mayhem

Women in rock and metal used to something of a rarity, but not these days. Over the last few years, women have been fronting bands all over the place. The results are not always the same, so it’s always a pretty cool thing when you find someone with one hell of a singing voice, a strong vision of who they are and relying more on substance than style. We became a fan of Madame Mayhem right before the release of her album Now You Know in 2015. We gained even more respect for her when we saw her live show when she opened for Doro. We were floored by this young lady for many reasons including those mentioned above.

Here we are in 2017 and she just released her highly anticipated new album entitled Ready For Me. The multi-talented Corey Lowery (Saint Asonia) is on-board again as producer as well as co-writer of the album. His brother Clint Lowery (Sevendust) has several songwriting credits on the album as well. Madame Mayhem had been playing many of the new tracks before the album’s official release date on 10/20 as she was served as an opener on former Hinder frontman Austin Winkler’s Love Sick Radio Tour. There’s a great mix on this new album as she switches up grooves from some great rock songs with pop elements splashed in to slower songs then to some rockers with a bit more grit to them. Regardless of the rhythm, these are songs that are hard hitting and easily relatable. We had the chance to talk with Madame Mayhem before soundcheck recently on the next to last date of her run with Winkler in Winston Salem, North Carolina. We talked about the new album and much more!

I love the variety on this album; you have some slow stuff, the rock stuff with the pop elements and then the rock with some more grit and edge to it. You definitely don’t like to drive in the same line for this journey and that’s a good thing.

Madame Mayhe: We like to change it up a lot because for me; I like all different styles and tempos. It’s really what kind of riff we have and what kind of thing that we want to write about. We realized that it has all these different waves and it flows really nicely, so I’m really happy about it.

I think the sequencing on it is great and I wondered if you were involved with that?

Of course I am; I have co-writers and my producer who I love. There are so many people who have contributed to making this album what it is, but it wouldn’t be me if I wasn’t sticking my nose in everything that was happening too.

Tell me a little bit more about this album and who was involved with it. I know it was produced by Corey Lowery (Saint Asonia) and that he and Clint Lowery wrote a song together for it.

I co-wrote all of the songs on this album with Corey; on the last album Now You Know that Billy Sheehan produced, Corey and I co-wrote the two singles from the record as well as a third song. Billy told me that we should continue writing together and we did. We ended up coming up with enough songs to make an album and then we brought in some other people with us to write. Clint Lowery is actually a co-writer of multiple songs on the album. Some of the songs are just me and Corey and some are me, Corey and Clint. There are two that were written by me, Corey and Troy McLawhorn from Evanescence, which is really cool because he’s local to where Corey is based out of. To be able to work with all of those guys was really awesome. Bevan Davies played drums on some of the tracks and he’s such a great drummer. For the rest of the album, we got my old drummer Ryan Bennett to do it which is amazing. I’m really proud of this album and with each album that I do, I feel like I’m growing. The more I’m in this industry, the more I am developing as an artist.

What’s different in your development from the last album to going into making the new one?

With Now You Know, I started to open up and tell a little more truth which I was always nervous to do in my career. With Ready For Me, everything is out there; everyone is going to hear everything, every struggle, every frustration, my relationship issues and everyone will know everything.

It sounds as if your emotional floodgates have been opened.

Yes, you know everything now or at least everything at the time of the making of the new album. I felt like I needed to do it because it was really therapeutic for me. Writing about those things helped and I think that it actually contributed to the songs. No matter what the song is about initially when I write it, it could mean something totally different to someone else when they hear it. When my brother and I are upset, we listen to very heavy music and it makes us happy. To each his own and how they interpret it; I think people can relate to this new music and really rock out to it. We really weren’t going for any particular type of sound on this album except for being hard rock and modern sounding. We love real instruments too and there may be a little bit of cool effects, but not much.

Real instruments are always better in my opinion; it doesn’t take people long to figure it out when they come to see you.

When we play live, what we’ve been getting great feedback from people on is how we sound. They say it’s just as good as the album if not better and that’s a huge compliment. That means we’re doing our job on stage soundwise, plus we like to run around a lot and we need to make sure we have that high energy to do so.

“All Around The World” is your first single and video; was it tough picking that one to launch the album with?

Picking the first single for this album was probably the hardest it’s ever been. I’m in love with every song and there were certain parts about each song that I thought people would think were catchy. It’s funny because no one could agree on which song to be the first single. Finally, we had to come to a consensus and we will definitely have a few singles off of it, but what should the first one be? “All Around The World” is an upbeat, hard hitting, straight forward, no gimmicky type of song, so we thought we would power start with that one. We already have two more chosen and another music video in the works. It’s being edited and we’re probably going to shoot another one. Everyone should be on the lookout for the other video because I think we’re going to keep promoting this new album because of the possibilities of these songs.

You’re headed over to Europe with Fozzy which should be a pretty cool experience.

We have one more show after this one and then we go to Atlanta to rehearse. My original guitarist is the same guitarist for Fozzy. He’s with them right now and for now I have Joey Raggs, who you saw with us on the Doro tour. We’ll be going with Billy Grey for the Fozzy dates, plus sharing a bus with them. It’s going to be a great experience and I think the first date is October 27 in England and that’s one week after the release of my new album.

Your last album was also released in October; is that just a coincidence or is there something to that?

I think it’s just coincidence; if it was up to me I would have released it on Friday the 13th! The release is more of a label call, so they decide what works best.

You played Sturgis not too long ago; what was that experience like?

It was an amazing experience; it was Sturgis Buffalo Chip and we played two nights. One night was right after Ozzy Osbourne; we were on the side stage and it was the coolest thing. As everyone was filing out from the main stage, they could see us so that was pretty cool. We had a day off and the next day we played the main stage opening up for Alter Bridge and All That Remains, which was also very cool. They warned us about the bikers revving their motors; it doesn’t mean it’s bad when they do it. It’s actually a good thing to hear and as soon as I got off stage I had to ask someone if they revved them and they did.

There have been several high profile tragedies surrounding live music since we last talked including the tragedy in Paris, the Ariana Grande concert and now Las Vegas. Do these events make you change how you approach playing live?

It makes my parents really nervous and it does us as well, but I always tend to be super aware of my surroundings. We’re about to go to Europe and the UK and we have to hope that nobody wants to put a target on our backs. You can’t stop playing music because of it; this is my passion. Creating and writing songs, I love it and it’s so important to me, but singing and performing live is my actual passion. I put my blood, sweat and tears into that and it’s always been my favorite thing since I was a very young child. I can’t stop it just because of an attack like that and if I did I would be miserable. You just have to hope that everyone will get their shit together and stop attacking people.

Here are a few fun questions to wrap things up with. You’re back on the road, so what is your favorite road food and also one that you try to avoid?

They’re both the same thing; we try to be a very healthy band so everyone usually eats right. For some reason on this tour, all of my guilty pleasures including Easy Mac, Reeses and Cup of Noodles are all I have been eating and it’s terrible. We ran out on the bus, so we’re not getting anymore and I need get back in shape once we get home before heading off to Europe. I am the junk food queen and it is a problem; that’s why I work out every day.

If music was over and you had to go into professional wrestling, what would your wrestling name be?

I’d keep Madame Mayhem; I’m not changing it.

Ok, but what would your finishing move be?

It would probably be some strange move from the stage that I would incorporate into it; definitely something with the gloves.

I know it’s almost time for soundcheck, so we will end on this one. You have young girls in your audience who may be looking to you as a role model and I think that’s great. You are a very strong female, with your own sense of style and you are showing them that they don’t have to flaunt everything to make it. What do you tell those girls who are looking up to you and who may be getting bullied because of daring to be an individual like yourself?

Every single person will tell you something different and I’ve been told to lose weight, be sluttier or less slutty, cover up, and don’t cover up. Be you and be comfortable because as long as you are comfortable then it doesn’t matter what other people think. If you’re getting picked on for being different, you may think it’s the end of the world right now, but just keep doing what you’re doing. I was always picked up in school and I had my friends, but I was different from all of them. I worked on my craft and I focused on what I wanted to do with my life and then I came out better for it.
